My nephew grinds his teeth alot as he sleep through out the night and I have questioned my brother about it, he claim's that he has talked to a dentist and he was told that my nephew needs to grow out of this trend. I want to know if thats true and if this is good advice. My nephew is three years old and grinds them pretty badly as he sleeps, I'm worried about the damage of cracking, chipping, and breaking of his teeth. I don't want him to go through that pain. And the last question is would a retainer fix or be best for this problem.
There are typically 3 reasons why people grind their teeth at night. The first is caffeine. In adults it's usually too much coffee and in children it is soda or chocolate. The second reason is stress or anxiety. I hope this is not a three year old's problem, but it is possible. The third reason is when the teeth don't meet together evenly. I wouldn't think that "growing up" would change any of these situations. A three year old is too young for a retainer or mouthguard.
