Frequently Asked Questions

Hi, I have a back molar with a resin (white) filling - when I am chewing if a grain is bitten on that tooth it causes a sharp pain with a throb afterwards - I was told by my dentist that I need a porcelin filling - I am questioning it as the filling is rather large and close to the nerve I cannot understand how this will make a difference - I had this resin filling taken out and another put in because they said it was leaking & that is why I was getting pain and now they are teliing me again that is why the pain is there. Thankyou Carol

The explanation given to you does not make sense to me either. Biting pain is often a sign that a tooth has cracked and may need to be crowned to hold it together. Other causes are that the filling may be trapping food and causing the pain. The solution to that problem may be as simple as grinding the filling material to allow room for the food to be chewed rather than mashed. It is always possible that this new filling is also leaking and may be causing the pain.
