DentaQuest provides dental coverage to members of Smiles For Children, Virginia’s dental program for Medicaid, FAMIS and FAMIS Plus. Smiles for Children is offered by The Commonwealth of Virginia’s Department of Medical Assistance Services (DMAS) and provides comprehensive benefits to members ages 20 years and younger; Medicaid members over 21; and pregnant adults enrolled in Medicaid and FAMIS MOMS. 


 

Member Benefits

Children

Smiles For Children members under age 21 are covered for all medically necessary dental services provided by a participating dentist. Some services covered include:

Prevention

  • Oral exams (every six months)
  • Cleanings (every six months)
  • X-rays (when necessary)
  • Fluoride (every six months)
  • Sealants

Treatments

  • Fillings
  • Crowns (some caps)
  • Root canals
  • Space maintainers
  • Extractions (tooth removal)

Other services

  • Anesthesia
  • Orthodontia (braces) (approval required)

Adults Who Are Not Pregnant

Smiles For Children also serves adult Medicaid members. Coverage focuses on overall oral health, prevention and restoration. Services may include:

Prevention

  • Oral exams
  • Cleanings
  • X-rays

Treatments

  • Fillings
  • Root canals
  • Gum related treatment
  • Dentures
  • Extractions (tooth removal)
  • Other oral surgeries

Additional

  • Other appropriate general services such as anesthesia

Smiles For Children does not cover braces for adult Medicaid members.

Pregnant Adults

Smiles For Children also provides benefits for eligible pregnant Medicaid or FAMIS members who are 21 years and older, including:

Prevention

  • Oral exams
  • Cleanings
  • X-rays

Treatments

  • Fillings
  • Crowns
  • Root canals

Other Services

  • Anesthesia

Smiles For Children does not cover braces for adult Medicaid members who are pregnant. Benefits stop at the end of the 12th month after the baby is born.
