Tooth enamel is the hard, outer layer of your teeth. Good oral hygiene starts with protecting that enamel. Tooth enamel is the strongest part of the body and protects teeth from damage. This damage can be caused by diet, friction, wear and tear and other factors.

Under the enamel is a layer called dentin. When enamel wears away, it can expose the dentin. This can make your teeth sensitive to hot or cold things, says the American Dental Association.

What Causes Tooth Enamel Erosion?

Many everyday habits and conditions can gradually weaken and wear away your tooth enamel:

  • Drinking too many sodas, sugary drinks or sports drinks
  • Eating lots of candy and sour foods
  • Eating and drinking things with a lot of acid
  • Brushing your teeth too hard
  • Not having enough saliva in your mouth
  • Medications or vitamins
  • Acid reflux (when stomach acid comes up into your mouth).
  • Grinding your teeth

How to Protect Your Tooth Enamel

You can take several simple steps to strengthen and care for your tooth enamel:

  • Rinse your mouth with water after eating or drinking sugary or acidic things.
  • Wait an hour after eating acidic foods before brushing your teeth.
  • Ask your dentist about toothpaste that can help strengthen your enamel.
  • Use a soft toothbrush and don't brush too hard.
  • Use toothpaste or mouthwash with fluoride
  • After eating acidic foods, eat or drink something like milk or cheese to neutralize the acid.
  • Chew sugar-free gum after eating.
  • Try to eat and drink fewer acidic things.
