Fluoride: What It Is, Why It Helps
Fluoride is safe and effective to help fight tooth decay. Everyone needs fluoride for good oral health - kids and adults! Along with good nutrition, daily oral hygiene and regular dental visits, fluoride helps you keep smiles healthy and bright.
Fluoride is a natural mineral, and many toothpastes and mouth rinses include it. Certain food and drinks have fluoride in them, too.
During a checkup, your dentist can brush a thin layer of fluoride on teeth. This strengthens the tooth surface, also called the enamel, and helps to resist things that cause cavities such as germs and acids in food and saliva.
Contact your Main Dentist to ask about including a fluoride varnish treatment during the next checkup. The name of your Main Dentist is listed on your Medicaid ID card. If you do not have a Main Dentist, use our Find a Dentist tool to locate one near you.
