Breakthrough T1D

Leading global type 1 diabetes research and advocacy

Location: California
Website: www.breakthrought1d.org
Grant amount: $50,000

Breakthrough T1D, formerly JDRF, is the leading global type 1 diabetes (T1D) research and advocacy organization. With a mission of accelerating life-changing breakthroughs to cure, prevent and treat T1D and its complications, Breakthrough T1D helps make everyday life better for the people who face the disease.

T1D was once viewed as a condition that could only be diagnosed in childhood. Now it is known that T1D can develop at any age, regardless of family history, and half of all T1D diagnoses are in adults. The incidence of T1D is also on the rise.

Breakthrough T1D is focused on building awareness and expanding access to early detection of T1D, before insulin is required, through a simple blood test.

The Health Access Hero Awards grant will support T1D early detection through screening, in partnership with Touro University California’s Mobile Diabetes Education Center or MOBEC. This is part of Breakthrough T1D’s early detection pilot program, designed to increase access to screenings, educate the community and healthcare professionals, and inform the broader clinical implementation of T1D screening in the future.

We are working to expand access to early detection of type 1 diabetes through screening, which we know can change the course of the disease for those who may develop it. Early detection of T1D before symptoms appear and insulin becomes required can help reduce the risk of life-threatening complications at diagnosis. It also allows people time to access therapies, participate in crucial T1D clinical trials, connect to appropriate care and prepare for future medical needs.
